They ate their lunch, chatting about the busy wedding schedule Charlie had for the entire summer. They were waiting for dessert when Jamie looked at Ryan and said, "Does it really make sense to get married?"

Rolling her eyes, Ryan said, "That's a crazy question. We just have a few-"

"No, no, I'm not asking that right. What I mean is, why have a ceremony? What will it give us that we don't have?"

Ryan took a quick look at Charlie. "Uhm...it'll be a church wedding. That's what you want."

"Yeah..." She also sought Charlie's gaze. "But something about it seems off."

He reached across the table and put his hand over hers. "Tell me what you mean."

"Well, if Ryan and I had the same beliefs, it would be something we were both doing. But if I'm the only one making a vow to God..."

Ryan looked more than a little aggrieved. "I can't lie, Jamers."

Jamie reached out and grabbed her hand, shaking it quickly. "I don't want you to. That's my point. Getting married isn't legal, and if we're not doing for religions reasons it's just a big party."

Making a face, Ryan said, "That's how I've been thinking about it. I already promised you that I'd be your spouse. That's all the counts for me."

Charlie said, "Would you feel different if the state recognized your marriage?"

Ryan shrugged."I guess." Then she nodded more firmly."Yeah, I would."

"That's always an option," Charlie said. "It won't be long."

Jamie looked unconvinced, but she said, "I'm not ready to get on the schedule for next year. Let's see what happens."

"Is that okay with you?" Charlie asked Ryan.

"I guess." Ryan peered at Jamie carefully. "Yeah. I guess it is."
